Learn to Do by Doing
4-H is an international youth organization involving more than seven million members in 80 countries around the world.
4-H in Canada began in Roland, Manitoba in 1913 as a Boys & Girls club – a community-based organization dedicated to rural youth.
In 1952 the name was changed to 4-H. Today 4-H reaches farm, rural and urban youth, focusing on leadership, personal and skill development including citizenship, responsibility and independence.
Formed in 1951, the Manitoba 4-H Council coordinates 4-H programming throughout the province and provides participation in the policy-making process. Through a representative structure, the issues, needs and concerns of members, leaders and staff are assessed when decisions are made about 4-H programs in Manitoba. The Council administers specific provincial programs and manages funds solicited through 4-H club donations and sponsorship. The Council works closely with its partner, Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, in the development of individuals building rural communities.

Invests and manages funds to support future growth and development of the 4-H program in Manitoba.

The Manitoba 4-H Council Board meets two times a year: Fall – AGM (November) and Summer (June). The Board consists of 6 Adult Directors, 3-4 Youth Advisors, 4-H Canada Youth Representative and 3 non-voting representatives (staff & Manitoba Agriculture Liaison). This has been a fun-filled year of events and opportunities, starting with our Provincial Conference and 2nd annual Gala event last fall, followed by events for all age groups including provincial Communications, Highway Cleanup, and the best-attended Rally yet. We were also excited to have the opportunity to promote 4-H to the wider community through various volunteerism, youth, and agriculture-focused public events.
In August, our members opened their homes and welcomed Japanese students into their families and offered them a glimpse into life in Manitoba. I was honoured to attend several YBF homestay events and encourage every family to host a student next year! We are grateful to the York-Benimaru Foundation and to Manitoba Agriculture for their continued support of this exchange.
At a board level, we’re working through the development of a new provincial Strategic Plan and had the opportunity to collaborate on a national plan as well. We continue to engage with other provinces on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion discussions as we adapt our program to better serve a wider audience of participants.
The 4-H Manitoba Mix n’ Mingle Fundraiser is now just weeks away, and I am looking forward to attending this exciting, revamped event in support of our great program alongside leaders, alumni, and supporters of 4-H. I can’t wait to see you all there!
As always, I would like to thank and recognize the provincial office team as well as our volunteers across the province. This program depends on you, and I am grateful for the time and effort you dedicate to the positive youth development of our members. Our program would not exist without you volunteering your time, sharing knowledge and skills, and your ongoing dedication to 4-H in Manitoba.
As the 2024-2025 4-H year wraps up, so does my term as the President of Manitoba 4-H Council. It has been my honour and pleasure to help lead this fantastic organization over the past two years. Over the past twenty years since joining 4-H at the age of 8, I have been a member, an ambassador, a leader, and participated in governance at various levels. I have seen 4-H in Manitoba grow in leaps and bounds, incorporating technology and adapting to better serve the needs of our membership. More than anything else, I am excited to support the incoming board along with new President, Gene Piasta, as the organization continues to grow into the future.
I encourage everyone to Learn to Do by Doing by attending a new event, trying out a new project, or participating in provincial programming, and I wish you all the best in the 2025-26 4-H year!

When 4-H Canada’s Leadership Summit moved to a virtual format, Manitoba leaders and staff arranged watch parties across the province, allowing participants to experience the event together. Our Provincial Communications Extravaganza once again showcased the confidence and skill of our members, while Provincial Rally in May drew 210 members and welcomed 8 students from Tootsinaowaziibeeng Treaty Reserve for a day filled with workshops, a club parade, tug-of-war, and plenty of fun! Intermediate Camp returned to its traditional format, offering engaging workshops and leadership development opportunities.
Summer was filled with club achievements and special connections, including the York-Benimaru Foundation Exchange, which saw the welcome return of our friends from Japan for a two-week stay with 4-H families across Manitoba.
Our 4-H Canada accreditation audit, required standard documentation to ensure we continue to meet the high national standards of the 4-H program.
We closed the 2024–2025 year with 1,389 members. Our team remains deeply committed to serving the members, leaders, and volunteers who make 4-H Manitoba thrive. Our united love of 4-H continues to inspire us as we create meaningful experiences for our 4-H family.
4-H in Manitoba continues to evolve and grow, and the 2024–2025 4-H year was no exception. We are deeply grateful for the openness and enthusiasm of our members, leaders, and volunteers who embrace change and innovation alongside us.
This year marked the launch of Staples Print on Demand for project manuals and resources on September 1. This transition not only eliminated the need for storage space but also introduced a more efficient and cost-effective way to provide materials to our members.
Manitoba 4-H Council Inc. also welcomed new Board members who have been actively engaged in developing a new strategic plan to guide our organization into the future.
As always, the start of a new 4-H year was full of activity and excitement. We hosted the third annual Agri-Career Quest, followed by a successful Senior Members’ Event. The Provincial Leaders Conference adopted a new format this year, with two one-day events held in different locations. This change sparked strong attendance from new participants, fostered meaningful conversations, and gave leaders more opportunities to connect on a personal level.

In February I began my term as Manitoba’s representative on the 4-H Canada Youth Advisory Committee, alongside three other new representatives, joining six returning members. YAC is the national youth voice for 4-H Canada providing leadership opportunities for outstanding young people from across the country. YAC members are youth leaders who want to continue to play a role and contribute to the 4-H movement in Canada.
To begin the year, we elected our executive and brainstormed top priorities for 2025-26. We identified our three focus areas for the year as follows:
a. Member Retention – retention of senior members and member connections.
b. Accessibility – financial accessibility for national events and reducing barriers to participation.
c. Communication – social media and podcasts, creating an elevator pitch for 4-H, and spreading awareness about 4-H opportunities.
I joined the member retention group, as I feel strongly about this effort, and it is something I have witnessed in Manitoba. I also joined two other operational committees: Program Innovation and Marketing, Communication and Fundraising.
In April we attended the virtual Leadership Summit where YAC members volunteered as session MC’s.
Over the summer I participated in two national initiatives. In June, I assisted with reviews of applications for the MNP 4-H Canada Scholarship, Campbellbrook Fund 4-H Canada Trade Scholarship, and TD 4-H Agriculture Scholarship. This was a great experience to read about strong 4-H members from across the country. Through July and August, I participated in the review of the activity book for the new STEM initiative that 4-H Canada is developing for Junior Members.
I will be travelling to Calgary at the end of November to help deliver programming at Members Forum. I am looking forward to attending Leadership Summit 2026 in Calgary in February where all our YAC members will gather in person for the first time.
I am honoured to have been elected to this position, and I am looking forward for what is to come over the next year and a half!

Bayer CropScience Canada Presents: A Celebrated Success at the 2025 Provincial Communications Extravaganza

The 2025 4-H Manitoba Provincial Communications Extravaganza, presented by Bayer CropScience Canada, was a resounding success! Held on April 26 at Canad Inns Fort Garry in Winnipeg, the event brought together talented 4-H members aged 6 to 25 from across the province to showcase their public speaking and visual presentation skills. Thanks to Bayer’s generous support, the day was a true celebration of confidence, creativity, and leadership—key pillars of the 4-H experience. Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and inspiring performances!

The third annual Agri Career Quest Tour took place from September 25th to 28th, 2024. Sixteen members, along with three chaperones and five staff members from M4HC and Manitoba Agriculture, began their adventure at T-Birds Food, Fun, Games. The tour kicked off with a presentation from our presenting sponsor, Nutrien Ag Solutions, followed by some delicious pizza and downtime in the arcade.
After the engaging start to our Agri Career Quest Tour, we boarded the bus Thursday morning and travelled to Virden to tour the Virden Animal Hospital. Our members had the opportunity to see the vets and vet techs in action and asked many engaging questions about the occupation. Our next stop was the Virden Livestock Yards for another informative tour. We enjoyed lunch on the bus as we travelled back to Brandon, where we toured Saputo Dairy Products and then Behlen Industries LP. Both locations shared very informative information about their industries. The last tour of the day was at Fusion Credit Union, where members learned about employment options within the Credit Union system. After a quick cleanup at the hotel, we had supper at The Dock on Princess, enjoying presentations from local suppliers. We ended the day with a delightful trip to The Velvet Dip for an ice cream cone.
Friday morning began at Mazergroup in Brandon, where employees from each sector of their business shared their job descriptions and the requirements for their jobs. Then we hopped on the bus and travelled south to Smiley Worms, a company committed to creating products that address various environmental problems in the modern world. Our next stop was Souris, where we enjoyed lunch at Chicken Chef. After lunch, we visited Nutrien Ag Solutions, where the members had the opportunity to ask questions about employment opportunities and tour the facility. We then travelled back to Brandon and visited Manitoba Beef & Forage Initiatives - Brookdale. Here, the members toured the fields and attended a presentation by Stephanie Colli. Our day concluded with supper, followed by mock interviews and resume writing.
The final day of the tour began at Richardson Pioneer Ltd., where members learned about elevator operations and the available employment options, followed by a quick tour. Next, we visited The Green Spot Home & Garden, where Ryan Boyd, from Boyd’s Beef, shared his success story as a 4-H alum and the steps he took to help his farm become successful. The members enjoyed lunch made from locally sourced suppliers and then toured the greenhouse. This concluded the Agri Career Quest tour of 2024.
Once again, our members and partners shared positive feedback throughout the tour. We extend our heartfelt thanks to our presenting sponsor, Nutrien Ag Solutions, and our supporters Corteva Agriscience, Fusion Credit Union, RBC, and Behlen Industries LP, who supplied lunch on Thursday.
Executive Director Shannon Carvey and Club Support Coordinator Karen Olafson attended Bruce D. Campbell Farm & Food Discovery Centre to host a station at Amazing Ag Adventure with Ag in the Classroom on September 24th and 25th. Colton Olafson and Karen Olafson presented on September 26th and Karen tackled the day on her own on September 27th.
We presented eight times a day – 15-minute sessions for each of the four days. The children were from schools across central and eastern Manitoba (including home schools), grades 3 to 6 on Tuesday thru Thursday and high schools on Friday.
Our presentation included – What is 4-H and Farm Safety for grades 3 to 6 students.
We had a farmyard with barn and tractors and a fence pasture with cattle (including a cow/calf pair) and talked about safety around farm equipment and livestock, with hands-on discussion. We also did a couple hands on activities with each group – standing in a safe place if a tractor was moving through the yard with a round bale on the front of the tractor and a good example and a bad example of how to approach livestock in the pasture and how the cow, that they got to name (one of us being the cow), would react to being approached from behind, loudly vs from the front, calmly.
On Friday, with the high school students, Karen talked about careers in agriculture and her background with 4-H and how it ties into the ag sector. The remainder of their visit at our station – we played an interactive game of Pictionary with all pictures to be drawn of ag related careers.
This year’s “What School Doesn’t Teach You” event was held at the Faculty of Agriculture building in Winnipeg. The Holiday Inn South was our overnight accommodations for the weekend of October 18 – 20, 2024.
The event kicked off Friday afternoon with a visit to the Legislative Building where members met with Minister Kostyshyn. This was followed by an engaging presentation from Jennifer Block and Apathy is Boring. After a brisk walk, members attended a mocktail reception at the Kitchen Sync, where they honed their networking skills with industry leaders. The day concluded on a high note with a Winnipeg Jets hockey game.
The entire day on Saturday was spent at the university, with members touring the campus and residences, and participating in various workshops. The day ended with a fun-filled evening at U-Puttz Amusement.
Sunday began with an informative session on food and nutrition, followed by a budget shopping exercise. Members travelled to Red River Coop in St. Norbert to shop for ingredients and then returned to campus to create lunch masterpieces. The event wrapped up with participants completing their evaluations before heading home.
Overall, the event was a resounding success, providing valuable experiences and learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom setting. All members in attendance received their Project Achievement.

This year, two separate Provincial Conferences were held. The first conference took place on October 19th at Camp Manitou in Headingley, with 19 leaders in attendance. The second conference was held on November 2nd at the Russell Inn, with 18 leaders participating.
In preparation for the conferences, attendees were asked to share their discussion topics and concerns beforehand. These topics were compiled into a PowerPoint presentation for group discussion, which generated many great ideas and solutions.
The day concluded with a game of Jeopardy and a staff Q&A session. Participants appreciated the format and thoroughly enjoyed the one-day event.

The Second Annual Manitoba 4-H Green Tie Gala was held on November 6, 2024, at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, bringing together 136 enthusiastic 4-H supporters for a memorable evening of celebration and community. The event highlighted the vital role of 4-H in developing leadership skills and fostering growth among Manitoba’s youth.
Attendees enjoyed the thrill of the re-called horse race, where they placed bets on their favourite horse for a chance to win exciting prizes. The silent auction and raffle also offered an array of amazing prizes generously donated by supporters, helping to make the night even more engaging and successful.
A special highlight of the evening was the attendance of Ron Kostyshyn, Minister of Agriculture, who signed the Proclamation recognizing November as "Show Your 4-H Colours Month" in Manitoba, reinforcing the province's commitment to youth development.
Critical care physician Dr. Kendiss Olafson, a 4-H alumna and assistant professor at the University of Manitoba, delivered a powerful keynote address on the theme “4-H: Building healthy and resilient youth.” Her insights and personal connection to the program resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring continued support for 4-H initiatives.
This unforgettable evening was made possible through the generous support of our major sponsors, Richardson Pioneer and AgriHub, whose contributions played a crucial role in the success of the event. Together, we celebrated the achievements of 4-H Manitoba while raising vital funds to ensure the future growth of our programs and initiatives.
The Green Tie Gala once again demonstrated the strength and dedication of the 4-H community in Manitoba, bringing people together to support a cause that positively impacts youth across the province.
On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Manitoba 4-H Council staff and members of various 4-H Manitoba clubs joined their counterparts across the country in proudly donning green for Show Your 4-H Colours Day.
The annual event is an opportunity for 4-Hers, volunteers, alumni and supporters to celebrate and promote the youth program in their communities.
This past year, 4-H Manitoba successfully reintroduced the judging team program after several years of absence, giving youth the opportunity to develop their skills in evaluation, decision-making, and public speaking. The program was met with enthusiasm, and we were able to form a strong team of four dedicated young women who committed to practices, workshops, and learning opportunities leading up to the competition in Regina Saskatchewan in November 2024.
One of the highlights of the year was attending Canadian Western Agribition for the first time in many years. Our team participated in a variety of classes, including judging eggs, haylage, fleece, heavy horses, bison, and several other categories. This diverse mix of classes challenged the members’ knowledge, critical thinking skills, and communication while exposing them to new agricultural sectors.
Our four members performed exceptionally well, holding their own against peers from across Western Canada. Their results demonstrated the hard work they put into preparing for the event. Our first year’s success has built excitement for continuing to grow and develop the judging program within 4-H Manitoba in the future.
The 4-H Manitoba Provincial Curling Event took place on February 17, 2025 at the Elm Creek Curling Rink. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from Elm Creek Curling Rink and a couple of local families, we were provided the facility and monetary help to have the event.
Open to all 4-H members, the bonspiel brought together 32 curlers—forming 8 teams—who each played two six-end games and enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Elm Creek Activity 4-H Club.
This event was a wonderful example of community spirit and collaboration, showcasing how local support helps create meaningful opportunities for 4-H members. It encouraged participants to stay active, build friendships, have fun, and continue to Learn to Do by Doing.
From March 31 through April 5, 2025, Manitoba 4-H proudly made our annual return to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair.
Tuesday, April 1st was 4-H Day at the RMWF, and as always it was a very busy day and a highlight of the week. Young attendees took part in special crafts at the Manitoba 4-H Council Inc. booth, while Clover – our dystocia model cow – proved to be the star attraction. The calving demonstrations and learning opportunities Clover provides continue to entertain and educate hundreds of visitors each year.
We were also honoured by a visit from the Honourable Ron Kostyshyn, Manitoba’s Minister of Agriculture, who brought greetings on behalf of the province, and announced the continued funding provided by Manitoba Agriculture to Manitoba 4-H Council Inc. for the provincial operations. In addition, Minister Kostyshyn presented the King Charles III Coronation Medals to four of our amazing volunteer leaders - Cheryl Antonia, Coral Meggison, Gene Piasta, and Margaret Walker.
4-H Day was capped off by the “Parade of Clubs” into the main arena for opening ceremonies. We had quite the impressive crowd in that arena to represent 4-H and recite the 4-H Pledge.
We truly enjoy our time engaging with everyone at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and sincerely thank the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba for once again providing us this platform. We look forward to many more years of being able to share the value of 4-H with the community.
The third annual Provincial Rally was another outstanding event, bringing together 205 enthusiastic members, including eight students from the TTR reserve. Based on the feedback received, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants.
The opening ceremonies featured the parade of clubs, a heartfelt message from Minister Kostyshyn, and words of encouragement from our valued supporters. One of the most anticipated events of the day—the Tug-of-war—once again proved to be a highlight, drawing excitement and camaraderie from all involved.
The Provincial Rally marked the final event in a series of judging competitions for our members vying for a spot on the Provincial Judging Team, which will represent 4-H Manitoba at the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina from November 24-29, 2025. From June 13 to 15, 2025, M4HC hosted its annual Intermediate Members’ Event at Winkler Bible Camp, where members enjoyed a dynamic weekend of learning, exploration, and community, nestled comfortably in the Evergreen Lodge.
Friday evening welcomed members as they settled into their accommodation and participated in introductory activities to build rapport and set the tone for the weekend.
Saturday morning launched with energizing team activities: Land Navigation and Human Foosball encouraged problem-solving, coordination, and lots of laughter. By midday, everyone made their way to the beach and dock for a stretch of aquatic excitement. Members bounced on a water trampoline, crafted creative sandcastles, and took to the water in kayaks, kneeboards, and canoes. The highlight of the afternoon was a lighthearted but spirited canoe race that showcased both teamwork and friendly competition.
After drying off and recharging, the group set out on a Photo Scavenger Hunt across camp, capturing creative snapshots and building memories together. The day wound down with a classic campfire, Bannock making, and a relaxed movie night, complete with snacks and cozy vibes.
Sunday morning wrapped the weekend with group reflections, a few final games, and heartfelt goodbyes as members packed up, leaving with new skills, stronger bonds, and stories to tell.
This year’s event reinforced the value of collaboration, outdoor exploration, and fun in a safe and welcoming environment.

The Highway Cleanup Campaign had 6 of 13 clubs registered to participate in the worthwhile effort, able to complete the task. In total, 60 4-H members, leaders, family and friends cleaned 43 kilometres of highway and filled 136 bags of garbage. That amounts to $1,720.00 raised by our 4-H clubs.
This campaign would not be possible without the generous support of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure.
The Highway Cleanup Campaign increases environmental awareness in people of all ages and results in a cleaner Manitoba. Thank you for all the energy and effort you put into this program every year.
2025 marked the 38th year of the Homestay Program, which has provided 822 Japanese youth and chaperones, and 234 Manitoba youth and chaperones, with the opportunity to experience life-changing international travel. The program’s objectives are to foster connections, improve knowledge and cooperation between the two cultures, and encourage a greater understanding of the agricultural industry in both Manitoba and Japan. Over this time, approximately 382 Manitoba host families have also helped to strengthen the ties between Japan and Manitoba by welcoming our Japanese guests into their homes and hearts.
The Japanese delegation, consisting of 20 students and one chaperone, visited Manitoba from July 30 to August 15. On July 31st, they participated in various activities: a tour of the Manitoba Legislature hosted by Minister of Agriculture, the Honourable Ron Kostyshyn, a visit to Rosser Holsteins Dairy Farm and the Holtmann Family, where the visitors toured their Dairy Farm operation, a tour of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, a walk through The Forks, and supper at Santa Lucia. It was a very busy day.
The Welcome Party was held on August 1st at Kelburn Farm, where host families met their students. The students and chaperone were hosted by 26 4-H Manitoba families from 21 communities. The Sayonara Party was also held at Kelburn Farm on August 15th. Representatives from our program supporters, HyLife and Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, were also in attendance at both events.
York-Benimaru Foundation Councillor, Mr. Toshiaki Nakano and staff member, Eiko Noguchi, who arrived with the students, hosted a thank-you dinner for the program partners at Bailey’s Restaurant. Mr. Nakano, along with Eiko, visited two host families before returning to Japan. During her stay, Eiko managed to visit two additional families.
The many benefits of the 4-H program are showcased through media opportunities highlighting the host family experiences and high-profile events.
4-H in Manitoba once again benefitted significantly from the fundraising opportunity offered by SeCan. From October 21–25, 2024, producers across Manitoba and Ontario reserved specific varieties of SeCan soybean seed for the 2025 growing season. For every unit of soybean seed reserved, SeCan contributed $1 to support 4-H programs.
The majority of these funds were directed to clubs and Area Councils in Manitoba, based near participating retailers, ensuring local impact. This year, five Area Councils and 42 clubs benefitted from the campaign, supported by 18 SeCan soybean seed retailers across the province.
Manitoba 4-H Council, along with the members and leaders who benefit from the 2024–2025 Grow a Leader funding, extend their sincere thanks to SeCan, their supporting retailers, and the farmers whose participation made this initiative a success. Together, they help 4-H Manitoba continue to develop confident, capable, and inspired young leaders.
In the 2024-2025 year, we welcomed new clubs; Souris 4-H Beef Club, Melita 4-H Beef Club and Killarney 4-H Beef Club. Area Councils and Clubs continue to provide their members with opportunities for experiential learning and personal growth. Club Support Coordinators Karen Olafson and April Willis continue to work with area volunteers to bring new ideas and programs to the members. In 2024-2025, the CSCs focused on assisting clubs and area councils at events and achievements throughout the year. As always, our CSCs are committed to working with our volunteers and striving to have all volunteers fully screened and trained with Youth Safety at 4-H in Canada and Commit to Kids or Respect courses.

Leadership Summit was held virtually April 11-13. Rather than participating individually, Manitoba volunteers and staff chose to host multiple watch weekends and participate together. The weekend kicked off with keynote speaker Stephanie Malia Krauss, topic, how to help nurture 4-H members for lifelong and long-life thriving.
4-H Canada planned fun themes for each day Friday, Fill Your Screen with Green; Saturday, The Great Colour Splash; Sunday, Canadian Pride. Semi-structured networking chats offered a chance to connect and have open conversations on some topics important to our 4-H community, Focusing on Your Why, Shared Leadership, Thriving Through Challenge. Workshops focused on Program Excellence, Leadership Excellence and Professional Development.

Four current 4-Hers were the recipients of the 2025 4-H Manitoba Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarships. The Manitoba government generously established a $1 million endowment fund with the Brandon Area Community Foundation, which provided $38,126.00 for the scholarships.
The 4-H Manitoba scholarships were awarded in honour and recognition of four long-serving leaders: Estelle Bahuaud (Headingley 4-H Club), Sharon Evans (Hartney 4-H Club), Lois Clark (Poplar Hill 4-H Club) and Karen Jones (Tilston 4-H Beef Club).

The Manitoba 4-H Endowment Fund Foundation, which was established in 1985, is responsible for the disbursement of funds and long-term investments on behalf of the 4-H program in Manitoba. The Foundation is directed by a Board of Trustees and assisted by a Financial Advisor and an Administrative Assistant.
In 2024, the Foundation Board consisted of:
One dollar from each member fee of $85 is donated to the Foundation by Manitoba 4-H Council. Additional 4-H club donations may come from club fundraising activities or club dissolutions.
At the Annual Meeting, 4% of the Foundation’s earnings are calculated to provide support to Manitoba 4-H Council’s ongoing programs. In 2024, that amounted to $18,579.00 towards Council programs.
The Foundation’s fiscal year is January 1 to December 31.
Thoughtful Gestures for Special People – Gifts to the Manitoba 4-H Endowment Fund make a difference to 4-H Manitoba youth, now and for the future monies received are held in trust. The Manitoba 4-H Endowment Fund Foundation provides opportunities to honour special people:
In Tribute gifts can be made to salute an occasion (birthday, anniversary, graduation, retirement, or volunteer recognition) by recognizing a relative, friend or associate committed to rural Manitoba through agriculture or the 4-H program.
In Memoriam gifts can be made in the memory of a loved one. The family may also indicate a donation to 4-H in lieu of flowers. A Manitoba 4-H Endowment Fund Foundation In Memoriam donation is a fitting means of ensuring that a special commitment is recognized, remembered and honoured.
